Really well written article and loved the idea of the Social Web folding into offline reality in the future! The checkin-esque services are in the end just status updates that do away with the status and replace it with databases of context relevant structured information. So one essentially just broadcasts structured information whether it being a location, a movie or an appointment and by virtue of it being an update the audience knows that the user is doing this now. It is indeed funny that this is such a different experience than just reading someone's list of favorite movies on their blog and illuminates the irreversible development of humanity towards a state of constant realtime networking with our social graph. The implications are mind blowing but what is most interesting is who will become the service that will surface all this noise to me in a meaningful relevant context aware way that is personalized to my likes and dislikes? Whoever it will be I'd like to work for them!
