Daniel, thanks (as always) for a thorough and insightful post. One compelling justification I heard for the FriendFeed acquisition was, simply, staff: FriendFeed has some powerfully talented staff, including the people who built Gmail and Google Maps. Does that warrant a $50 million buyout? Who knows... But FB has money to burn and lots of ambition, so obviously will benefit from adding Paul Buchheit, James Norris, Bret Taylor to their payroll.
